Dear Ann:
\J By way of preparation for our meeting on February 11, here are three
documents: a paper on the potential marvels of home terminals, a note on the
dangers of monopoly, and a proposal for research in home terminals that we
made to NSF. The current status of the NSF proposal is that they have sent
it out for review, have received some back, and expect to get in touch with
me in a week or two. However, the office to which the proposal has been
sent probably doesn't have the money to fund it now even if they like it.
Besides, their initial reaction was that it was too applied for them, and
they wanted to fund some of the theoretical parts which I declined.
As you will see, the NSF proposal asks what can be done now to make
home terminals viable without asking for institutional changes. I have a
few more ideas now than are embodied in the proposal.
The idea of making a joint project with TYMSHARE has two bases.
1. Home terminals have to become commercial eventually.
2. TYMSHARE might put some effort, experience, and good ideas into it.
3. Another part of NSF is interested in supporting joint university
industry efforts that might lead to something commercial.
Please show this to whomever is concerned.\.
Sincerely,
John McCarthy
